Curator’s Spotlight: Rosella Hyland

Curator’s Spotlight shines on Rosella Hyland this week. Rosella created abstract work using the medium of handmade paper made from natural resources such as dryer lint, corn husks straw, cotton fiber, denim, cattails. She further treats the paper with a variety of natural dyes made from walnut, coffee grounds, mineral clays. As a result, each piece is imbued with the deep colors of nature and further embellished with mark making techniques such as stamping, wax resist, or drawing.

All of this is interesting in and of itself but Rosella then merges these elements into a compelling and balanced composition. These are images in a way but on a different level simultaneously read as weathered fragments torn from its original context with only a hint or two previous environment.

These would shine on the walls of a house done in contemporary or mid-century décor.
